Post help me pick an apple variety!
I have a bunch of apples -- Florina, Egremont Russet, Jonafree, St. Edmond's Pippin and Reinette du Canada which I am growing as oblique cordons. They are all mid-bloomers.

I have an offer to get another free apple tree! From the list of trees offered, I've selected a short list:

Liberty--Day 10--productive, scab free, bears young, heavy cropper
Golden Nugget--mid-blooming, scab resistant, bears young, good cropper, spur bearer
Karmijn de Sonnaville--Day 12, some scab resistance, good cropper
Merton Beauty-Day 14, no info on the scab resistance or productivity
Sunset-Day 10, scab resistant, good for pots, heavy cropper, "good" flavour
Sultan Kent -- DAY 20-scab free, good cropper, "very good flavour"
Reinette Rouge D'Etoile -- no info.

Do you have any recommendations in terms of suitability for the Vancouver, Canada climate? I care about flavour, scab resistance, productivity and size, in that order. Liberty gets top marks for productivity in the Pacific Northwest. I think it tastes OK, but it is not one of my top picks (I like Cox's Orange and Egremont Russet for flavour, to give you an idea... flavour is so personal.) I haven't been able to taste the other varieties.

Any thoughts would be most appreciated. Thanks kindly, Dorothy

I can vouch that the Sunset tastes very nice. Never tried Sultan Kent, but the description sounds tempting.

Liberty is no slouch apple either. I consider its taste among my top 10 for taste. The only thing I have against it, and this may not concern you, is that it is not a long term winter keeper (neither is Sunset). But boy is it good off the tree. And productive too.

Is it possible you could add both Sunset and Liberty?

Post sigh...
I would like to add them ALL. But I really don't have room. I only have a small garden which faces NW (with south exposure), so there's only a few good spots for apples anyways. As it turned out, the Sunsets were all spoken for, so Liberty it was. Thanks again for the info... Dorothy
