Post Nick Botner's 50th Wedding Anniversary
Here's a photo of Karla and Nick Botner in 1965, she 21 and he 38. They celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary tomorrow. This photo taken around their breakfast table this morning. What a privilege and joy it is to know this magnificent couple.

He's been out there making it happen for a long time. What a treasure to the orcharding community.

For decades I’ve stood next to or spoken with members the stature of Nick Botner at various HOS events ...where someone would eventually inform me, “That was Nick Botner!” Felt as though I were amid Gods - I think I was

Thank you for posting their photo ~

A lot of us have been growing fruit actively for many years, but I'm not sure there is anyone of the stature of Nick BOtner. I'm not putting the rest of us down. I mean , what he's accomplished is amazing. It is like he's on a level above us mere mortals. I have a lot of respect for what he's done.

John, what’s amazing is to have been around ‘long enough’ to have met many of the charter members, like Larry McGraw… http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cg ... d=33619541 ...and I can’t/ won’t attempt to name the many others who helped shape my orchard, or my view on life for that matter.

...as we slowly morph into societal elders I can only hope to fill out the shoes of those folks … including some very ..tolerant wives… Not that collecting fruit varieties isn’t a healthier pass time than many, but it’s remained obvious to me how the ‘truly great’ of our organization were fully supported by their spouses, both men & women, and what a pleasure and honor to have met both. Lots to live up to, for sure - but what a positive and productive legacy!

We are trying to stand on the shoulders of giants. Doesn't always work, sometimes we fall down, but it's fun to try.

...it’s funny (as in, weird)... while grafting at the propagation fair yesterday Nick Botner shown up. As he worked with Shawn just a few seats over, I just stood in awe… I’ve never earned one of our cool custom HOS windbreakers, and had to buy my society hat, though have been given a life-membership … I felt like an unworthy fan too shy to approach, Mr. Botner

He looked strong, and due to a lull in the action, I just watched him stride out. What little of the banter I heard had him interested in a variety Shawn had -- like Nick Botner needs more apples! ...LOL over here..

Hey, got a compliment myself - my ‘neighbor grafter’ was great, and I began to listen for loads of ‘new advice’ regarding fruit tree management… After some cider.. I thanked him for sharing, then he thanked me. Said he’d learned to graft from my presentation at our grafting classes, years ago. That made an already magnificent day! ...now if I’d only had the guts to have shared my appreciation with Nick…

I can relate to your sentiments.

From the advice table I eyed him collecting scions!
