Post looking for Jupiter grape cuttings
Hi --

I'm looking to buy cuttings of Jupiter grapes. I realize now is not the time for dormant cuttings anyway, but I thought it would put it out there to see if there's any interest. I'm in Canada, and can't find Jupiter grapes here.

I realize most of the people on the forum are in the US, and I totally understand some people may not want to ship things to Canada ... some people don't seem to care, some people don't want to.

Also, if you have any other suggestions for how to get Jupiter grapes, I'm game. For example, if anyone is ever coming up to Vancouver BC and would rather bring me a plant or cutting than ship it, that would work for me too.

Cheers!

Jupiter is a patented variety from the U. of Arkansas, so only licensed growers can sell it. Shipping it where it hasn't been legally cleared could violate the licensing agreement. If Jupiter has gone through quarentine into Canada, you'd need to find a nursery there with a license to sell it, You might check the U. of Ark. website for a list of licensed growers.

OK, thanks for the info. I don't really understand how the patenting system works. The U of Ark website doesn't list any Canadian growers.

Out of curiosity, what pests would they be quarantining it for?

Jupiter plants are sold by Whitman Farms and Double A Vineyards. I think maybe Double A sells cuttings and they have volume pricing.

Also check on Bunchgrapes in Oregon to see if he sells it. He sells some patented varieties.

Different areas are quarantining for different pests. You should be able to go to the website of whatever agency is in charge of agriculture in Canada and find a list of what is not allowed to cross the border and why.

I was disappointed not to find any Jupiter grapes at this years All About Fruit Show… Are they that new?

A couple of summers ago I helped plant a ‘vineyard’ of them; hundred’s of plants, with even more added last summer. But they’re not producing yet and I’ve never tasted any. What I read lead me to believe the owner had done his homework; they sounded to be the ‘best’ of the planet series.

As I was helping set out sample grapes at this years AAFS I was asked ‘which I’d plant.’ After reading about “Jupiter,” - that was my answer …as we searched the tables for them… Seems all the ‘best’ seedless grapes at the time I planted now have ‘superior’ varieties, or as I was jokingly corrected at the show – cultivars.

Viron, Jupiter is very difficult to find inside Oregon. It's not possible to import Jupiter from any other state (except maybe Washington) because Oregon has strict quarantines about grapes.

Every place that I've found Jupiter grapes can not ship them to Oregon. I've been hunting for months for a source.

My attitude about plant quarantine, is "good for them" and "thank you, State of Oregon". We've got enough plant diseases and bugs to deal with without bringing in more. But it does make it difficult to obtain grapes.

Interesting, though I haven’t talked to him recently, this is a very public guy and I’m (nearly) positive he went through the proper channels obtaining the Jupiter’s.

…so, I’d have to make a clandestine belly-crawl by moonlight to get my hands on some..? They aren’t the only grape he planted but they are the bulk. Guess it’s time to pay him a visit… by daylight

I wouldn't even think of accusing your friend of smuggling.

It's possible to bring in grapes with proper certification, which would be do-able for an entire vineyard, but much too expensive for a couple of plants.

Grapes are easy to start from cuttings and you know someone with Jupiter, so it looks to me like you are all set.

I know of one place in Oregon that sells Jupiter cuttings, but Jupiter is marked "sold out"

We've been growing and fruiting Jupiter grape here in southern or for about 5 yrs. It is our favorite, by far, in the "planet" series...and we have most of them. Other favorites are Venus, Price and Swenson Red. Jupiter was late to fruit this year..normal for us is late Sept, early Oct.

Cloud Mountain Farm in Washington state is offering Jupiter. I'd never heard of them before, but they have very good garden watchdog ratings.

Sorry, I forgot to look to see if they ship to Canada.

I'm trying to figure out what else to order so I can make the $25 minimum order. I've been ordering like crazy already so most of my garden slots are already reserved (and then some; going to be scrambling to find places for a few more trees.)

Broadacers nursery in Hubbard Oregon sells Jupiter grapes they also have a demo field where they offer trial tasting, and purchase by u-pick. The grapes he sells are on rootstock and they are usually available in June or so.

Thanks so much for all the tips. Sadly, Cloud Mountain does not ship to Canada, and it doesn't look like Broadacres does either. I can't find any place that does... which is why I was hoping to buy cuttings off a home orchardist when they do their winter prune this year. It's funny -- I can buy all the US grapes I want in a supermarket, but getting a plant seems impossible!
