Is there a difference between Matsu and Mutsu or is this the same apple variety?

The correct name is Mutsu. I never heard of an apple called Matsu but I am always learning something new.

Here's what I found on the "Matsu" Apple:

"(Apples - Crispin) Crispin, or Matsu, apples are among the larger of the eating apples. As the name implies, they are crisp and slightly tart. Aged Crispin apples have a tendency to get slightly "mealy" and somewhat sweeter. It is best to buy these apples very soon after harvesting in the autumn."

Here's what I found on the "Mutsu" Apple:

"The Mutsu Apple has a moderately sweet flavor with firm, juicy and cramy white flesh. Its skin color is a yellowish green with an orange blush. The Mutsu apple is also known as Crispin. This apple is vigorous, fairly early, and the fruit is large and oblong shaped. It is excellent for fresh eating, sauces, pies, and baking. This apple stores and keeps well."

It looks to me like a variation in the name of a Japanese Apple variety ... to the point of giving "our own" name: "Crispin" --- Good question though ~
