Portland microclimate - huckelberries, pawpaw and sugar mapl
Hi
I'm new to this forum - thanks for providing the resource.
I live in Portland Oregon, have a yard that I'm planning to populate with edibles. Two questions regarding pawpaw and huckelberries. I have areas of shade - do both these plants do ok in shade? Also what time of year to plant in this part of the world? Appropriate amendments for our clay type soil?
And one more question as well.I have several large sugar maples on the property. Anyone in the kind of climate found here in Portland had experience with maple syrup extraction ?- not sure if the climate would support this, would appreciate to hear about this as well.
Thanks and Best Regards,
Reza A. Portland OR

Re: Portland microclimate - huckelberries, pawpaw and sugar
A. There are many kinds of huckleberries. Almost all would prefer at least 1/2 shade.
B. Baby pawpaws need at least temporary shade. Grown up pawpaws can fruit in 1/2 shade. You will get less fruit, but the bigger issue is, will the fruit ripen? Check the variety you are growing to see if it is a late pawpaw. Then maybe not. This is not the time of year to plant either one. Spring after leafing out is better for pawpaw. Huckleberries pretty much Oct-April is best.
C. Sugar maples don't do as well for extraction here due to the climate not encouraging flow of sap as much as say, New England. ]\ John S PDX OR

Red huckleberries grow in forest settings, so for sure they grow in shade.
