Hello. My name is Bob Hatton and I work with Portland Fruit Tree Project and have begun noticing more Asian Pear trees this year that are suffering from some kind of pitting/dimpling.

From Ted's article on Bitter Pit, I think that it may be that affecting these trees. However, the symptoms also look quite similar to Stony Pit virus. The research I have done on Stony Pit virus so far seems like it mostly affects European Pear varieties.

I took a couple of photos of the fruit (whole and cross-sectioned) but the file size is too large to attach here. If you're interested, I can send you those.

I would appreciate any help that folks can offer on this.

I have only had mild versions of this. Since I am growing for myself, I don't care too much. I do add shells when I go clamming to my fruit trees because I have heard from so many sources how important calcium is to fruit trees.

I have heard from others who have also had a particularly bad year with this in Asian Pears in 2011.
