Post Coddling Moth Timing
I live outside of Rochester NY and have had a terrible time with Coddling moth. They absolutely ruin my apples each year. I have used Bonide Fruit Tree Spray and found it largely ineffective when it comes to coddling moth. I have done a lot of research on this and found and ordered a product that is made out of kaolin clay. I don't recall the brand name but I'm sure others will be familiar with it. The big question is when do I apply it? It appears to be a lot of importance on timing. I am also assuming I could use this on my pear tree which finally look to putting out fruit this year.

Thanks and look forward to your comments.

I think your product is called Surround. I use footies that have been soaked in it. They are very effective. I also use ziploc bags, which also work.

I like to put them on when the fruit are about the size of a marble, a cherry, or a jawbreaker, but smaller than a golf ball. It is usually early in May at that time. It works for me. I used to get absolutely nailed by codling moth and now it's not much of an issue. My Asian pears got it even worse than my apples, but now, it's almost nothing, and I have even more fruit trees than I did then.

Here in the Pacific Northwest we can log in to a website and get some fairly accurate info on when to expect the codling moth if we fill out the required data. I think we in the Northwest are still at least 50 degree days away from anything to worry about (a technical scientific term not to be confused with real days)

However, living in New York you might try this website that has some very very knowledgeable people on it and simply ask others about timing. I know the guy with the moniker "harvestman" lives and works in New York.

Surround is kaolin clay and is not the only "game" in town so to speak for excluding codling moth......but is a popular one.
