Post Cedar Apple Rust from cedar woodchips?
Hey folks

There are a couple of pear trees that we've been caring for that have been well-pruned and mulched this year and last, and this Spring has been better weather than last Spring - yet they have the Cedar Apple Rust worse than they did last year.

The trees are mulched with cedar chips. Is it possible that the chips can be carriers of Cedar Apple Rust?

I'm wondering if we should try removing the chips or if it's just time to resort to a spray program of compost tea or Lime-Sulfur

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Cheers,

Bob

Don't know the answer to that. But i would like to share a story of when i first moved to western oregon. I read many an article with great concern about cedar apple rust until the tenth article that finally got around to describing in scientific terms instead of common names that they were talking about junipers. western redcedar, junipers and the cedars of Lebanon are totally unrelated. I also wondered how Larch Mountain got its name when there are no larch trees anywhere around. but that's another story for another time.
