I mentioned to the HOS tourers last week that I plan to put in a Kiwi arbor at the East end of our property on the edge of douglas fir forest.

Father's day I got a chance to clear and level about 200 square feet, then haul and spread wood chips, erect an arbor that is a repurposed gazebo frame, plant a male hardy kiwi on one corner and a Ken's Red on the other and finally encircle them both with deer netting.

Great work, Jafar. Must feel good to finally get out and get stuff set up. Thanks again for hosting the tour. Kiwis are so productive and rewarding once they get established. ALso because they are not closely related to other fruit, they balance the disease/pest load of your compost/yard for permaculture diversity efforts.

Thanks for the encouragement. It was fun and gratifying learning to use the tractor to level the area. Also good experience for some other upcoming projects.

I planted the Ken's Red in the front right corner and then put the male in the opposite corner to maximize room for each. In retrospect I should have put the male at a different corner to leave open the option of adding another female at that prime position. I'll probably move the male this weekend. I kind of hate to touch it because it is already behind the female and I won't get any fruit until it is flowering.

I managed to keep the vine maple, a hazelnut and a bunch of salal growing at the edges of the clearing.
